Description

During the winter semester of the academic year 2022/2023 the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest held a course on authoritarian systems and discrimination.

The seminar was organised forbachelor students in history. The subject matter examined various aspects of discrimination, prejudices. The first block followed aspects of colonialism and French nationalism. Then a special colonial theme was discussed: Japanese imperialism, its European and Asian aspects. Then followed issues on Portugal, the issue of Italian women, aspects of Italian and German racism-antisemitism-nationalism, and the various forms of discrimination that took place in Central Europe during the first half of the 20th century. Finally, issues of methodology were discussed during two lectures in the Parliament library.

Japan: yellow peril for Europeans, oppressive Asians for neighbours. The Japanese great power was associated with an imperialist foreign policy, which also influenced the public opinion in Europe and the surrounding regions in Asia. Central European forms of discrimination in the first half of the 20th century. Not only totalitarian dictatorships were characterized by discriminatory measures. Race and nationality question in the Italian (and German) way. Anti-Semitism, racism, oppression of nationalities are all different discriminatory measures, which affected the population of Germany and Italy with different intensity and at different times. Examining the differences and similarities is necessary to get a detailed picture. (lecturer: Juhász Balázs)

Portugal and the case of retornados. The situation of compatriots who settled in the colonies and then returned home with the loss of the colonies resulted in various discrimination phenomena in Portugal, the causes and forms of which are examined in this lesson. (lecturer: Szilágyi Ágnes Judit)
